Gates: The situation in Afghanistan, full of contradiction

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said today that Americans are facing a sharp fight in Afghanistan, but that pessimistic assessment of the situation in the country's excessive.

"Picture the situation in Afghanistan is full of contradictions. There are many challenges, but I think that some gloomy assessment of excessive," Gates said of the television "Bloomberg."
Gates said the last elections in Afghanistan as positive, despite controversy about its outcome and added that the number of casualties among U.S. soldiers in the country still increasing.
"No doubt we are facing a sharp fight ... and a lot of challenges," said Gates.
In the meantime, the commander of Western forces in Afghanistan, General Stanley Mekristal said that the situation in the country very difficult, but that "victory is possible, with a change of strategy," he said Reuters.
Officials so far have not announced whether Mekristal, who commanded a contingent of at least 100,000 American and NATO troops, ask for reinforcements in order to carry out their new strategy. U.S. President Barack Obama believes the situation in Afghanistan a priority in its foreign policy, reminiscent of British agencies.
